That cow up there? He has it out for you and your planet.

Cows burp, and cows fart. It's a climate change catastrophe at both ends. Certainly, this pales in comparison to the amount of greenhouse gases emitted from fossil fuels, but it's not inconsequential: roughly 5% of emissions are from livestock, and 70% of that comes from cattle.

Although we could reduce the demand for cattle in the first place, our featured company this week is meeting the market as it exists today. Blue Ocean Barns is turning red seaweed into a livestock feed supplement that helps cows convert more of what they eat into energy – instead of emitting it back into the atmosphere. Fewer burps, healthier planet!

If you have a high schooler or college student in your household, take note: they have internships available in Hawaii. If the idea of working on cow burps in Hawaii doesn't convince them to take a job in social impact, I don't know what will.

I have more than burping cows for you this week, so let's hop to it!

Blue Ocean Barns is working to address the climate impacts from agriculture by developing a more energy-efficient livestock feed. They offer jobs in two of the most beautiful places in the world: Kailua-Kona, Hawaii and San Diego, CA. Best of all, you don't need to be a scientist to take part in this unusual climate action company.

If you want to face this challenge to help the next generation of learners, there are lots of ways to get involved here.

World Centric manufactures compostable foodservice and packaging products and gives 25% of their profits to social and environmental organizations. I'm pretty sure that's the highest percentage I've come across when curating the newsletter, and the best part is their employees help choose what nonprofits receive those donations. True to their name, many of their donations support projects around the world.
